Open City, London’s biggest documentary festival, prizes this town apart to find all the documentary goodness hidden inside. Opening 16 June, the festival tackles both big issues and incredible human stories from around the globe, travelling to the badlands of Iraq and Afghanistan, the rise of organised crime in Russia, the last outpost of the American West, and outer space. With appearances and screenings from the likes of Christi Puiu, Penny Woolcock and Pawel Pawlikowski, highlights include Claude Lanzmann presenting a 25th Anniversary screening of his legendary film on the Holocaust, Shoah, named by Time Out as ‘The Greatest Documentary of All Time’; a bicycle powered open-air cinema playing classics such as Metropolis; a premiere of Leonard Retel Helmrich’s Sundance winning Indonesian family portrait Position Among the Stars; and Oscar winning producer Simon Chinn talking about the experience of making documentary classic Man on Wire.
It’s also worth noting that Soho Shorts’s friends Kino are being hosted by Open City, at an event which you can read more about by clicking here. It’s safe to say that neither this event, nor the festival as a whole, are to be missed.
With all tickets priced at just £5, discover why truth is stranger than fiction with Open City. 16-19 June www.opencitylondon.com
