This exciting Continuing Education Workshop and Networking Event is for all Filmmakers, Videographers, and Storytellers filming in all formats. So whether you’re shooting on Alexa or RED, or on an HD camcorder or DSLR, you will gain and learn how to apply important techniques and skills that will help you to elevate the production value of your documentary shots, scenes, and sequences.
Hand-held shooting is often a necessary skill in documentary filmmaking. We will examine situations using both the DSLR and a traditional camera; discuss techniques for attaining fluid movement; and when not to use hand-held; lighting for speed: quick set-up, base illumination, available light, the onboard camera light, and how to be prepared for any eventuality. This will be demonstrated with a DSLR and monitor. Ways to shoot interviews: all the elements that go into shooting interviews in efficient and esthetically pleasing ways. Demonstrations of different setups for various circumstances. Shooting exteriors, B-Roll, and cutaways for documentaries. Scouting, sun direction, sound issues, and general preparedness.

Additionally, this is an excellent opportunity to meet and network with professionals and independents in Manhattan, New York City; magazine staff; and Peter Stein, ASC, who has served as director of photography on over 50 feature films, TV movies, and documentaries. Peter has photographed classic cult films in various genres, including comedy and horror, as well as major studio and independent releases, and noted documentaries.
