Thirteen short films were shortlisted for the 2012 Virgin Media Shorts Awards, whittled down from hundreds of entries, and the winners have now been announced via last night’s awards ceremony at the BFI Southbank.
This year’s panel of judges, including actor Julie Walters and director Phyllida Law, awarded the Grand Prize to Rocket, starring super talented acting dog Bowie, who helped director Jennifer Sheridan walk away with £30,000 funding for her next project.
A further £5,000 was bestowed with the People’s Choice Award to PJ, Tiny Planet Explorer and the TiVO Award, a prize to the film voted the best by Virgin Media customers through their TiVo boxe, went to Dream Girl by Alice Seabright. Additionally, all 13 shorts will be shown in cinemas nationwide for a year, screening before the main features at Picturehouse cinemas.
Though missing out last night, we’d like to give our own special mention to Skirt by Amanda Boyle, the longer version of which, was shortlisted in this year’s RSSF Short Film Programme. If you liked the cut version you will love the long one!
Last month Virgin Media Shorts also unveiled 12 beautiful film posters, commissioned by Creative Review to illustrate the films shortlisted. Plus they ran a competition to design the final poster, for Lucky 13 winner PJ, Tiny Planet Explorer. The winning poster by Mia Kennedy (below) was chosen by Adrian Spooner, creative director at Virgin Media. You can see all the posters commissioned by Creative Review to illustrators from the Handsome Frank agency here.
